Southeast Asian cuisine is more popular than ever. Sushi bars and wok restaurants are popping up everywhere, but this region has so much more to offer! Heroes Made in Asia is dedicated to Asian (pop) culture. You can experience authentic street food from the region. The event features not only dozens of stalls at the food market, but also a diverse selection of workshops and live demonstrations from professional chefs straight from Asia. Foodies won’t want to miss this!

A Culinary Journey Through Southeast Asia

At Heroes Made in Asia, you’ll get to taste authentic dishes from countries such as China, Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea. At the food market, specialists from these regions prepare a variety of delicious dishes and snacks. But why stop at just tasting when you can learn from the masters themselves? Unleash your inner Jiro Ono and take part in interactive workshops and demonstrations.

Learn from Chefs Miyuki Masuda and Hanwool Kim

For this two-day event, top chefs Miyuki Masuda and Hanwool Kim are traveling to Utrecht to share their expertise in Japanese and Korean cuisine. On the food theater stage, they will not only demonstrate how to cook authentic Japanese and Korean dishes but will also compete in a thrilling Cooking Battle. Get ready to take notes and cheer for your favorite chef!

Japanese chef Miyuki Masuda is chef de partie at the renowned sushi restaurant Kashiba, founded by Kashiba Shiro, a former apprentice of the legendary Jiro Ono. Masuda is a true trailblazer—she was the first female chef to work in Kashiba’s kitchens. She will be joined by Hanwool Kim, a highly skilled South Korean chef with experience in the prestigious kitchens of the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Lasarte and the one-starred Oria (Barcelona). Hanwool is a master of combining flavor and technique to create dishes that tell a unique story.

Addictively delicious

When thinking of a seaweed roll filled with rice and vegetables, most people picture Japanese sushi. But have you heard of its Korean counterpart, kimbap? Similar in appearance to sushi, kimbap is sliced into bite-sized pieces. However, there’s also a smaller, snackable version called mayak kimbap (“narcotic kimbap”), which is eaten whole—no chopsticks needed! And it’s not called “narcotic” for nothing—these bite-sized rolls are irresistibly delicious! At the Narcotic Kimbap Workshop, you’ll learn how to roll the perfect kimbap and enjoy your own creations afterward. But be warned—a new addiction may be lurking!

The Green Gold

Matcha, the vibrant green powdered tea, has been consumed for over 1,000 years and is considered cultural heritage in China and Japan. This earthy, green gold plays an important role in Japanese culture and is even used in traditional tea ceremonies. Recently, matcha has become a favorite in the Western world, appearing on the menus of specialty coffee shops everywhere. But making a perfect matcha latte isn’t as easy as it looks—how do you ensure it’s rich and smooth, without bitterness? For all home baristas, there’s a crash course in the food theater to help you master the art of matcha latte-making.

Tea-sty

Most people prepare tea by simply boiling water and pouring it over a tea bag. But did you know that each type of tea has its own unique brewing method? During the Tea Tasting and Japanese Sweets Workshop, you’ll learn how to prepare different teas properly and discover which Japanese sweets pair best with each type. The perfect workshop for those who love learning through tasting!
