ACTIVE HEROES
sakura kai - NAGINATA
Sakura Kai is a Utrecht-based society founded in 1997, bringing the ancient Japanese art of naginata to HMIA. The naginata is a Japanese polearm used by samurai for centuries, and at HMIA Sakura Kai will be giving hands-on workshops so you can experience this powerful and elegant martial art for yourself.
Um Yang Kwon - Ssang Geom
a Korean martial arts school specialising in Hapkido, Qigong, Twin Swords, spear and hosinsul. At HMIA they'll be teaching Ssang Geom the art of the double swords as described in the Mu Ye Sin Bo, the first illustrated handbook of Korean martial arts. Once part of state examinations for military officers, this ancient skill involves wielding two swords for both offense and defense.
Dojo Yushinkan - IAIDO
Dojo Yushikan is a Utrecht-based dojo specialising in iaido, the traditional Japanese art of drawing the katana. At HMIA they'll be giving workshops on this centuries-old samurai discipline, focused on precision, presence and the perfect draw. Always wanted to handle a katana? This is your chance.
