The Base Set is the name of the very first main expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. In Japan, this set was released as the Expansion Pack, the first expansion for the Pokémon Card Game. The set is based on the Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green games and contains Pokémon from the first generation. The English version was released on January 9, 1999, while the Japanese version was released on October 20, 1996. Although not officially part of the TCG, Bandai Pokémon Cards Part 1 Green & Part 2 Red (released in September 1996) are considered a precursor to the Japanese Base Set and thus the oldest known Pokémon card releases.
